Shapes, and Learning (January 2023)

The toddlers didn’t really have a theme this week, but the after I chose my books, the preshoolers’ books connected through learning. I knew I wanted to use Magna Tiles at the end of storytime too, so I didn’t plan a craft or a time-consuming flannel board activity.

If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff (preschool)

Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty (preschool)

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (toddler)

Flannel Activity

This week, I found a bunch of felt shapes that had already been made in our main office. I put those out for the kids to play with and build whatever they wanted with them. They ended up taking turns with these felt shapes and the Magna Tiles.

Early Literacy Tip

Repeating songs reinforces memory and routine. We sing the same hello and goodbye song every week and that will help build their vocabularies and keep the routine.

In the preschool storytime, our hello song uses sign language and so I mention that they will learn the signs through repetition as well.

How it Went

This storytime was extra fun because of the open ended felt activity and Magna Tiles. They are so creative! I also asked which book was their favorite and the preschoolers said the mouse one because mice don’t go to school and it was so silly.

I was worried Ada Twist would be a little too long, but the kids enjoyed it. The rhyming text and silly story about things that stink definitely helped. The shapes books also gave them ideas for things they could make with different shapes which was my intent when reading those. I will definitely be bringing Magna Tiles back!
