Early Literacy Tip

There is a strong link between rhythm and reading. Participating in rhythm helps children grow awareness of different sounds and discriminate between those different sounds.

Craft

I had circle cutouts from the train craft a few weeks ago and we read the Very Hungry Caterpillar and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom so I decided to do letter caterpillars. I wanted to do the alphabet at first, but decided that would be way too much for them so I chose to do their names. They all turned out really cute and the parents loved them.

How it Went

Signing books is so much fun and really gets the younger childrens’ attention. I thought some of the kids may know these books and it turned out to be a great thing because when they already know a book, they get super excited to read them at storytime. They already know what is going to happen and they love that.

The craft was super fun too. Some of them glued the caterpillar onto a piece of paper and some did it like mine where it was just the circles. They all turned out adorable and they were so proud of them!
