Hi friends! It’s been a while since I’ve shared a little about myself, and a lot has changed since I first started this blog. Whether you’ve been following along for a while or you just discovered Early Literacy Librarian, I’m so glad you’re here!
I’m Kirsten — a youth services librarian at heart, currently taking some time to focus on family while staying closely connected to the library and literacy world. I’m home with my daughter for now, and I’ve been lucky to continue working with books in new ways — as a reviewer for Booklist, School Library Journal, Kirkus, and Children’s Literature.
I also spend time as a substitute at my daughter’s preschool, because I can never quite stay away from the energy and curiosity of young children. And of course, I run this blog — my love project — where I get to share my passion for early literacy, storytime, and creative book-inspired learning.
When I’m not reading or writing about children’s books, I love spending time outdoors and in the kitchen. I cook almost everything from scratch — from bread and sauces to baked goods — and I’m always experimenting with new recipes. I enjoy walking my dogs and exploring trails around my new home in Rochester, Minnesota. I’m also an avid runner; I completed my first ultramarathon this year and already have another 50K in my sights for 2026! I read a lot — both with my daughter and on my own — and I never say no to a good cup of coffee, a piece of chocolate, or something sweet. ☕🍫

Here you’ll find book recommendations, simple crafts, and seasonal storytime ideas that celebrate reading and play. My daughter and I often test the crafts together, so everything is tried, true, and a little bit messy — in the best way. For a more recent craft we did together, check out our pumpkin craft that we paired with some of my favorite pumpkin books.
I believe in the power of books to build connection, curiosity, and confidence — and in making sure every child can see themselves in the stories we share.
Thank you for being part of this growing community of readers, educators, and families. If you love celebrating early literacy, storytime magic, and hands-on learning, you’re in the right place.
