Books we read
This week we read books about the alphabet!
Bad Kitty by Nick Bruel
ABCs on Wheels by Ramon Olivera
LMNO Peas by Keith Baker
Chicka Chicka abc by Bill Martin Jr.
Songs we sang
ABCs
I think we all know how to sing the ABCs so I will leave it at that. Kids love to show their skills with singing this song.
Hurry, Hurry
Hurry, hurry drive the firetruck
Hurry, hurry drive the firetruck
Hurry, hurry drive the firetruck
Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding
Other verses: Turn the corner, climb the ladder, spray the water, and slowly, slowly back to the station.
Credit: I first heard this on Miss Rachel.
Apples and Bananas
I like to eat, eat, eat, apples and bananas
I like to eat, eat, eat, apples and bananas
Then you go through all of the vowel sounds!
Credit: Barney
This song is great to play around with vowel sounds and the older kids loved it.
Early Literacy Tip
Pick a letter of the day and find things that start with that letter – food, toys, books, etc. Try writing the letter together or making it out of play-doh.
Craft
Using foam letter stickers and crayons, the kids got to create whatever they wanted. Some made their names and some created a crazy masterpiece with letters everywhere and it was beautiful. They got to be creative and practice recognizing letters.
How it went
The alphabet is always a hit and anytime there is a fire truck, the kids are happy. This was an easy one to plan for multiple age groups and the older kids loved Bad Kitty.
Do you have any ABC book recommendations for storytime? How about crafts? Let me know in the comments!
